The eye’s surface is shielded by a tear film, a protective layer that keeps it lubricated, wards off irritation and infections, and aids in clear vision. Dry eye disease arises when there’s insufficient tear production or rapid tear evaporation, leading to irritation and symptoms such as burning, redness, discomfort, and blurred vision. Additional contributing factors include health conditions like diabetes, thyroid disorders, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and other autoimmune diseases, as well as medications such as antihistamines, antidepressants, blood pressure medicines, and hormonal treatments. Environmental conditions such as air conditioning, wind, dust, and prolonged screen use can exacerbate symptoms. Common indicators of dry eye include burning, stinging, redness, a gritty sensation, excessive watering, light sensitivity, eye fatigue, blurred vision, and difficulty with contact lenses, especially noticeable after extended screen use or exposure to dry environments.
To alleviate discomfort, individuals can adopt simple habits: adhere to the 20-20-20 rule by looking at something 20 feet away every 20 minutes for 20 seconds, blink regularly during screen time, manage environmental factors by avoiding direct airflow to the face, stay hydrated, ensure adequate sleep, and maintain a balanced diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids, fruits, vegetables, and nuts. If symptoms persist despite these measures, consulting an eye specialist is advisable to determine appropriate treatment, which may include lubricating eye drops, warm compresses, eyelid care, or other therapies. Early intervention can prevent ongoing discomfort and enhance activities like reading, driving, and digital device usage.
