In a significant move aimed at enhancing the nation’s financial infrastructure, the Qatar Central Bank (QCB) has granted certain payment service providers the ability to open accounts directly with the bank and access its Real-Time Gross Settlement System (QA-RTGS). This strategic development allows these providers to manage settlement operations directly, eliminating the need for intermediaries. Notably, SADAD Payment Solutions and Dibsy are the first to be integrated into this new framework, marking a step forward in digital financial services within the country.
The initiative is expected to bring about reduced operational costs for both payment providers and merchants. By streamlining the settlement process, it simplifies transactions and minimizes the number of parties involved, ultimately making financial operations faster and more efficient. This direct access also enhances QCB’s ability to oversee settlement operations, thereby reinforcing the robustness of Qatar’s payment infrastructure.
This development is a part of Qatar’s Third Financial Sector Strategy, which outlines an ambitious roadmap for the advancement of the country’s financial services sector. The strategy aims to foster a more agile and secure digital financial ecosystem. Through this new mechanism, QCB is poised to support the growth and innovation of the digital payments landscape, facilitating a more dynamic and responsive financial environment.
With this new system in place, other eligible payment service providers will soon have the opportunity to gain direct access to the QA-RTGS, provided they meet specific conditions and procedures. This move underscores QCB’s commitment to modernizing Qatar’s financial sector, ensuring it remains competitive and in line with global standards of financial efficiency and security.
