In a gesture of diplomatic solidarity, India’s Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs, Kiren Rijiju, traveled to Doha to offer condolences on behalf of India following the death of Qatar’s Father Amir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. This visit underscores the enduring and robust relationship between India and Qatar.
While in Doha, Minister Rijiju met with Qatar’s current Amir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. He expressed the Indian government’s sorrow over the passing of the Father Amir, relaying heartfelt messages from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Rijiju characterized the late Sheikh Hamad as a visionary leader who was instrumental in Qatar’s development and in fostering the strategic partnership between the two nations.
The Indian Prime Minister had previously paid tribute to the Father Amir, recognizing him as a steadfast friend of India and commending his significant contributions to the strengthening of bilateral ties. The Indian community in Qatar also mourns his death, remembering his leadership and contributions with deep respect.
In a mark of respect for Sheikh Hamad’s legacy, India observed a national day of mourning on July 13, 2026. During this day, the national flag was flown at half-mast on government buildings, and all official entertainment activities were suspended.
